Our client, a leading investment firm’s goal is to create positive change in communities across South Africa. In support of this goal, they invested in a new private hospital group focused on bringing affordable and quality healthcare to largely underserved communities throughout South Africa. After acquiring an established hospital in Mthatha, Eastern Cape in 2024, they partnered with Change Lab to facilitate a smooth transition in ownership.
The Challenge
The planned changes included new systems, processes, ways of working, and new ownership – impacting all hospital employees, doctors, and external parties. The primary goal of the change management effort was to minimise disruption to patient care and hospital operations and to help get teams up and running as soon as possible.
Our Solution
In support of this objective, our change management plan was designed to:
- Create excitement around the vision for the future and build buy-in and commitment from teams
- Clarify what was changing for each stakeholder group along with what they need to do to prepare for these changes
- Create opportunities for staff to engage with the change and contribute via discussions and planning sessions
- Build accountability and ownership for the changes by ensuring that leaders and managers owned and visibly supported the change
- Minimise dips in productivity during and after Day One through targeted transition planning and mitigation strategies.
The Outcome
Some key factors contributed to the success of this transition including:
- Aligned and committed leadership
- Active involvement and ownership from the hospital staff
- A structured change approach and plan
- Effective collaboration and partnership across all change enablers
Together these success factors enabled the team to meet the short timelines for the transition, with staff ready and excited for the change. Hospital operations were maintained, and hospital occupancy rates were sustained at the high levels leading up to the transition.
”The ChangeLab team was an essential partner in the ownership transition of our healthcare facility. Despite tight timelines and numerous constraints, they seamlessly integrated our systems, people, and processes. Their unique approach—marked by true collaboration, sharp attention to detail, and an unwavering commitment to getting the job done right—was a total game changer
